Rumi's Circle

a community of lovers

Mevlana’s Urs Collective Remembrance 8pm

Mevlana TombToday we remember the Night of Union of Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi as he passed into the Unseen, reunited with his Source, giving thanks for his beautiful example and grace, and that of his mentor and beloved friend, Shams of Tabriz.

We invite you to join us in collective remembrance not only throughout the day but especially at 8pm GMT where many of this community of lovers will join in prayer and zhikr. As Mevlana once said, “Always choose love.”

Hang around with lovers; always choose love.
When the Beloved so kindly uncovers Her Face,
when the curtains of majesty part, open in awe.
Always look at the one with a trace of that Face—
watch the Beauty of the Sun dance on his or her forehead.
The Sun put its cheek to the Beloved’s cheek, and gave such a light,
that when the moon sees his face, it faints to the earth.
“You alone do we worship,” is inscribed on his hair.
“You alone we ask for help,” is in the look of his eyes.
His body has become pure spirit,
inside and out, pure milk and honey.
The peerless Beloved hugged him so close,
his fragrance has become the Beloved’s.

~Excerpted from a translation by Nevit Ergin and Camille Helminski

A little while before his death, Mevlana opened his eyes and seeing his Murids [students] weeping and grieving around him said, “My death is true birth. I came from God and I am going to God. I am becoming His bride. Don’t weep for my death. Play music and dance. Mention God. All of us we came from Him and surely we will return to Him. Praise the Lord!”
